About Our Company:

What is IPA Source?

For more information, read the About Us page.

Who manages IPA Source?
IPA Source was founded in 2003 by a professional singer and educator. For more information, read the About Us page.

How does IPA Source's protect my privacy?
Your privacy and the protection of your confidential information is very important to IPA Source. Rest assured, we never divulge any personal information to a third party. See our Shopping Policy page for more information.

About Our Publications:

Are your translations/transcriptions original and legal editions?
Yes. All translations/transcriptions found on this site are our own unique editions and are not copied from other sources. Only works that are in the public domain or works for which we have permission from the copyright holder are presented on these pages. We are the authors, editors, and publishers and hold all copyrights to the IPA transcriptions and literal translations. For more information, please see our Legal Notice.

Your IPA transcriptions are different from what I learned.
Although phoneticians follow certain conventions in creating transcriptions they don't always agree-especially when dealing with transcriptions intended for singing. It is not unusual when comparing transcriptions from two sources that they differ slightly. In order to avoid the question of the individual preference of one phonetician over another, the transcriptions found on IPA Source conform to the accepted transcription practices of the most highly respected dictionaries of each language. For more discussion on this issue, please see our Diction Help pages.

Why are there no poetic/recital program translations on your site?
The primary aim of IPA Source is to provide IPA transcriptions and literal translations of songs and arias of foreign language texts. Occasionally, an idiomatic translation of a line is given if the meaning is not clear from the literal translation. It is our belief that only when a singer understands the precise meaning of each word will he or she be able to interpret the true meaning of the poem and imbue each syllable with its correct emotional content. Poetic translations do not specifically link meaning with the sound of the syllable. Since poetic translation can easily be found elsewhere on the web and are therefore not include on this site. For an extensive collection of translations suitable for recital programs, visit The Lied and Art Song Texts Page at www.lieder.net.

Print-outs are too small or too big.
The Adobe print parameters are incorrectly set. By clicking "print" in the Adobe reader program the printer dialog box will open. Follow these steps:

  1. In the print dialog window, select or de-select the "shrink to fit", "fit to page" or "shrink oversized pages to paper size" option before clicking OK. This can change your output.

  2. In the "Print Setup..." dialog box, please be sure to select your appropriate paper size (letter)

  3. You can even scale the output following these steps:
         a. Select "Print Setup..." from the file menu
         b. In the printer section, click on the "Properties" button
         c. In the following windows, click on the "Advanced" button on the bottom left
         d. Finally, here you can control every parameter of your output (such as Graphic scaling, etc.)

If you still have trouble, be sure to have installed the latest version of the Adobe Reader (6.0 or higher) then Contact Us.

The IPA symbols are visible on my computer screen but they print out as boxes. Why?
This is a rare but very tricky type of error that can stem from a number of reasons mostly related to compatibility issues with older computer systems. The best solution is to download the newest version of the Adobe Reader available directly from Adobe even if you already have a 6.0 or better Reader installed on your computer. Sometimes the reinstallation of the program will remove the conflict from your system. If the problem persists, Contact Us and we will help you find a solution.

The Catalog:

Is there a print version of the "Catalog"?
Absolutely! The Printed Catalog is updated each month. You can find a link to it on the home page in the "Resources" box on the right.

How can I obtain a transcription/translation not listed in the "Catalog"?
Make a request using Contact Us tab at the top of the page. IPA Source will then determine whether it is feasible to add the requested text to the on-line catalog and contact you when it is ready.

How do you decide which texts to offer?
Our first criteria is the availability of the musical scores. By comparing the contents of the most popular anthologies we have come up with a list of the texts most often used. The second greatest source comes from singers around the world in the form of your requests. In the past we have been able to provide a quick turnaround-sometimes in the same day! You may make a text request by using Contact Us tab at the top of the page.

Why don't you offer texts in all languages?
The world of art song and opera literature is vast and finding qualified translators experienced in the needs of vocalists and well versed in IPA is difficult. Plans are being made to include repertoire in more languages from experts in each field. Stay in touch for future announcements.

Will you be offering full opera libretti in the future?
Full libretti are beyond the scope of this website. Although we may make individual ensembles available from time to time, there is no plan to add entire opera libretti to the site.

Will you be offering choral literature on the site?
Although solo oratorio arias and occasionally the major works from which they are taken can be found on our site, translations/transcriptions of choral literature is beyond the scope of IPA Source.  Please Contact Us us for more information on specific requests.

Why are the works of some contemporary song composers included but the arias from Turandot are missing?
It is all about the publishing date of the text of the work. Many contemporary composers set texts that were published before 1923. In these cases, the music of the composer is under copyright but the text is in the public domain according to US law. Turandot did not premier until 1926; neither the music nor the text may be printed without the permission of the publisher, Casa Ricordi.
