Reynaldo Hahn, was the youngest of twelve children of a Venezuelan Catholic mother and a German Jewish father. Hahn’s (pronounced with the German aspirate -h [ha:n]) was born on 8/9/1874 in Venezuela. His first languages were Spanish and German and only learned French after his family moved to Paris. A child prodigy, he became the darling of the Parisian salons where he sang and played the piano (he had entered the Paris conservatory at the age of ten). At the age of thirteen, Hahn composed is most famous song, Si mes ver avaient des ailes (If My Verses Had Wings).
After the rise of the greater musical talents of Stravinsky and the Les Six, Hahn’s music, charming and sensitive, fell out of favor for much of the 20th century. Forced to leave Paris during the second World War he returned to Paris in 1945 as the director of the Paris Opera but died in 1947 without making a larger name for himself.
Hahn had no illusions about his stature as a composer of song and considered himself a pêtit maître –inferior to Fauré – but his songs have recently captured the interest of a public longing for a taste of La belle époque and to return to a way of life of sophistication, refined taste, literary sensibilities and elegant charm.
